Uni-Engine: A Tactical Advantage, A Logistical Solution
The Uni-Engine (Klump Pump) concept came from my years as a wildland
firefighter. It became clear to me during my eleven years as a
smokejumper that a tool was needed in that initial attack/extended
attack period in remote locations to be able to quickly deploy a water
delivery system which was reliable and easy to operate. I felt that
such a system would improve both safety and efficiency. This need was
re-enforced when as a Type 1 Operation Section Chief, we would plan for
a series of tanks, pumps, hose, fittings, etc and almost never get it
all there when you needed it. The Uni-Engine solves this. It all arrives in one package ready to go to work, hence our motto: "A
Tactical Advantage - A Logical Solution."

Some Lessons Learned
In the past two years we have learned some valuable lessons we would like to share with you:
- The system will save agencies money and improve safety
- The Uni-Engines were used on several initial attack fires. Pre-placing units in anticipation of lighting makes sense.
- Multiple moves on the same fire are accomplished with ease, especially when the standard inventory of hose, fillings, foam and fuel are pre-packaged at the helibase, ready for delivery when the unit is moved
As the Uni-Engine Company responds to the agencies ordering two or three machines at a time, we are developing a three unit delivery system. This will also allow us to provide more support equipment such as gel suppressant, mixer and folding tanks to support that operation when it becomes viable.
For various reasons, the ordering system has been sluggish in a couple of instances. We are aware of one order which never made it through the system, another took over 14 hours to get through. There is a good reason for this - the Klump Pump is not well known. Fire teams may want to take this into consideration and take steps to ensure that their Uni-Engine orders don't get lost in the ordering system.
